Biography
Prof. Saikat Chakrabarti completed his PhD in Electrical Engineering from the Memorial University of Newfoundland, Canada, in 2006. Prior to his doctoral studies, he worked as a Marketing and Commissioning Engineer at Asea Brown Boveri (ABB) Limited, India, and as a Scientific Officer in the Electronics Division of the Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC), India.
Following his PhD, he served as a Special Scientist at the University of Cyprus, and subsequently as a Research Associate and Lecturer at the Queensland University of Technology, Brisbane, Australia. Since December 2009, he has been with the Department of Electrical Engineering at IIT Kanpur, as Assistant Professor (2009–2014), Associate Professor (2014–2018), and Professor (2018–present).
From July 2023 to April 2024, he served as Professor and Director of the Emera and NB Power Research Centre for Smart Grid Technologies at the University of New Brunswick, Fredericton, Canada (on leave from IIT Kanpur).
His research interests are in the monitoring, control, and protection of smart transmission and distribution systems and microgrids. He is an IEEE Fellow (from January 2026), Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE), Fellow of the Institution of Engineers (India).
He serves as Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid (from December 2022), Associate Editor of International Journal of Electrical Power & Energy Systems (from November 2020), and Editor of IEEE Power Engineering Letters (from January 2020).

Synchrophasor (PMU)-assisted real-time state estimation, wide-area monitoring system (WAMS), dynamic state estimation, digital twin for power systems, hybrid state estimation considering SCADA, PMU, smart meters, and any other measurement systems.
Networked operation and control of microgrids, protection coordination, AI/ML applications in microgrid protection.
Angle, voltage, and frequency stability assessment and control of power systems with large penetration of converter-interfaced generation (CIG).
Measurement-based modelling of generating systems and loads, machine learning for power systems, non-intrusive load monitoring (NILM), data-driven parameter estimation.
Impact assessment of large-scale EV integration to grid, planning and operation studies, control algorithms for G2V and V2G operation.
